A Look Back At S&P 500 Sector ETFs in 2019

We have now reached the last leg of 2019 and it’s been a rewarding year so far for Wall Street. The key U.S. index S&P 500 has added as much as 26.3% this year (as of Dec 13, 2019).

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose 28.88% in 2019. All 11 sectors were positive in 2019 as shown below in the sector graph. Technology (XLK) led all sectors with a 47.9% return and energy (XLE) was the laggard, only gaining +4.69% in 2019. The Dow Jones index jumped 22.3% in 2019 while the Nasdaq climbed 35.2%.
