Weaker Retail Sales Drop Stocks

Futures move higher on US-China trade optimism

U.S. stock index futures were higher Thursday morning with market participants monitoring U.S.-China trade talks. At around 2:35 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 83 points, indicating a positive open of more than 51 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were also seen slightly higher.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.27% today. Sector decliners led advancers 6 to 5 as shown below in the sector graph. Financials (XLF) and consumer staples (XLP) led decliners down with, both with losses of more than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and utilities (XLU) each suffered losses of less than 1%. Communication services (XLC), energy (XLE), healthcare (XLV), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) each enjoyed minor gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index subtracted 103 points (-0.41%) to close at 25,439. The Nasdaq added +6 points (+0.09%) to settle at 7,426.

Weaker Retail Sales Drop Stocks

Real sales had its worst monthly drop since 2009 leading stocks lower on Thursday. Retail sales fell 1.29% in December. Bloomberg report that President Trump may be willing to extend the US China trade deadline another 60 days. Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and other US trade representatives in Beijing on Friday.
