Stocks set to open slightly higher amid reports of US-China trade breakthrough

U.S. stock futures were slightly higher Thursday, amid reports the U.S. and China have begun outlining a deal to end their protracted trade war. As of 1:45 a.m. ET, Dow futures rose 63 points, indicating a higher open of 78 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures also climbed.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.35% today. Sector decliners led advancers 7 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) led decliners down with a -1.55% loss. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) each suffered minor losses of less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each enjoyed small gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index fell -103 points (-0.40%) to close at 25,850. The Nasdaq subtracted 29 points (-0.39%) to settle 7,459.

Weak Economic Data Send Stocks Lower

Stocks dropped Thursday amid weak economic data and as investors awaited ongoing trade negotiations between the US and China. Mid Atlantic manufacturing data fell into contraction territory for the first time since 2016 as manufacturing conditions weakened this month. US and China trade talks have progressed as both sides have begun preparing memos of understanding over trade.
