Stocks fall as worries about US-China trade, Trump legal issues dampen investor sentiment

Stocks fell on Thursday as an ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China and worries of renewed legal issues for President Donald Trump dampened investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 85 points as Caterpillar lagged. The S&P 500 traded 0.1 percent lower with materials falling more than 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 (SPY) lost -0.17% today. Sector decliners led advancers 11 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), real estate (XLRE), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and utilities (XLU) each had minor losses of less than 1%. Technology (XLK) bucked the trend, had a small gain of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index was in the red by 76 points (-0.30%) to close at 25,656. The Nasdaq subtracted 10 points (-0.13%) to settle at 7,878.

The constant Washington news put stocks in the red Thursday as investors review the Washington noise. Additional tariffs from the US and China pulled bellwether multi-nationals Caterpillar (CAT) and Boeing (BA) down.
