US futures point to a partial rebound when markets open on Tuesday

U.S. futures pointed to a partial recovery for the three major stock indexes at Tuesday’s open after the market rout a day earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average futures climbed 109 points, implying a gain of 179.02 for the index at Tuesday’s market open, as of 9:37 p.m. ET Monday.

The S&P 500 (SPY) inched up +0.01% today. Sector advancers led decliners 6 to 5 as shown below in the sector graph. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) each had small gains of less than 1%. Decliners were led down by energy (XLE) -2.36% and consumer staples (XLP) -1.18%. Financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV) and utilities (XLU) each had minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index added +82 points (+0.35%) to close at 23,675. The Nasdaq increased by +30 points (+0.45%) to settle at 6,783.

Uneasy Market Cannot Find Stable Ground

The S&P 500 finished just above the flatline on Tuesday as investors struggle to find any tailwinds behind this market…just headwinds in front. Investors indicated a number of headwinds including a possible government shutdown, declining oil prices and the Fed’s inclination to raise interest rates.
