Dow rises 100 points after White House says China indicating it wants to make a trade deal

Stocks tried to rebound from a deep sell-off after President Donald Trump said in a tweet that China is coming this week to make a deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained about 90 points on Wednesday following a 470-point loss in the previous session, while the S&P 500 traded 0.33% higher and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.32%.

The S&P 500 (SPY) lost 0.16% today. Sector decliners led advancers 7 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Utilities (XLU) led decliners down with a loss of 1.37%. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), materials (XLB) and technology (XLK) each had minor losses of less than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), energy (XLE), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and real estate (XLRE) each had small gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index closed flat gaining +2 points (+0.01%) to close at 25,967. The Nasdaq dropped 20 points (-0.26%) to settle at 7,943.

Stocks finished flat on Wednesday as investors faced uncertainty regarding the China trade deal. Stocks rebounded from its lows as President Trump tweeted:

The uncertainty comes from the S&P and Nasdaq losing more than 2% on Monday and Tuesday following a report that the Chinese backtracked on key aspects of the trade deal.
