Futures point to slight decline for US stocks after the Dow’s record-breaking Wednesday

Futures implied Wednesday night that U.S. stocks were headed for slight declines when they open on Thursday. That slight pullback would do little to dent Wednesday’s post-Christmas surge for American stocks. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures implied a opening slip of 51.45 points for the index on Thursday, as of 7:13 p.m.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.86% today. All 11 sectors finished in the green as shown below in the sector graph. Financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) led the market higher as each of these sectors gained more than 1%. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each added less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index climbed +260 points (+1.14%) to close at 23,138. The Nasdaq advanced +25 points (+0.38%) to settle at 6,579.

Turbulent Trading Session Posts Strong Comeback

Stocks staged a massive comeback on Thursday as the Dow rallied from being down as much as 611 points. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also climbed into positive territory after being down as much as 2.8% and 3.3% respectively. Stocks fell earlier in the session as Reuters reported on some increased tensions between the US and China.
