US futures take a breather ahead of the open, after Dow sinks over 300 points

Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images The moves in premarket trade came after U.S. stock markets tumbled deep into the red on Monday, as trade tensions continued to escalate. Last week, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to threaten another set of tariffs, this time on the European Union.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.22% today. Sector advancers led decliners 9 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Leading advancers was energy (XLE) with a +1.26% gain. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each had small gains of less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF) and healthcare (XLV) each had minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index climbed 30 points (+0.12%) to close at 24,283. The Nasdaq added 29 points (+0.39%) to settle at 7,561.

Trade Uncertainty Overshadow Strong Fundamentals

Stocks posted a rebound from yesterday’s selloff as the trade uncertainty overshadow strong fundamentals. A good point was raised on CNBC today, the trade uncertainty/Washington noise is overshadowing the strong fundamentals of stocks, strong earnings and a strong economy. Investors should think long term and buy stocks on the dips that the Washington noise provides. Looks like that might have happened today.
