Dow futures seen slightly lower; Alphabet set to report earnings

U.S. stock index futures were slightly lower Monday morning, as market participants awaited another batch of quarterly corporate results. At around 3:00 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipped 15 points, indicating a negative open of more than 36 points. Futures of the S&P and Nasdaq were also seen relatively downbeat.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.68% today. Sector advancers led decliners 9 to 2 as shown below in the sector graph. Technology (XLK) +1.60% and industrials (XLI) +1.29% led the market higher. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each had small gains of less than 1%. Healthcare (XLV) and materials (XLB) each had minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index advanced +175 points (+0.70%) to close at 25,239. The Nasdaq added +83 points (+1.15%) to settle at 7,347.

Tech Sector Leads Overall Market Higher

Shares of Apple, Facebook, Netflix and Alphabet finished in the green leading the overall market higher. As a result, the tech heavy Nasdaq outperformed the other major averages. However, shares of Alphabet (GOOGL) were falling about -3% in after hours as the company beats on EPS and revenue but has falling advertising prices and rising costs.
