Dow futures point to a lower open amid more corporate earnings

U.S. stock index futures were mixed on Thursday morning, as market participants digested geopolitical news and looked ahead to another day of corporate earnings. At around 02:30 a.m. ET, Dow futures rose 8 points, but indicated a negative open of more than 40 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were both marginally higher.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.04% today. Sector decliners led advancers 7 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Leading decliners down were industrials (XLI) -2.01% and materials (XLB) -1.27%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) each suffered minor losses of less than 1%. Communication services (XLC) +1.12% and healthcare (XLV) +1.03% led advancers. Financials (XLF) and utilities (XLU) each enjoyed small gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index dropped 134 points (-0.51%) to close at 26,462. The Nasdaq added +16 points (+0.21%) to settle at 8,118.

Strong Earnings Lead Tech Heavy Nasdaq

Stocks ended mixed on Thursday as the Nasdaq led the major averages. Facebook (FB) shares jumped more than 5% on earnings as Q1 revenue beat expectations and revealed that the stories feature in 4 of its apps showed growth as well as its ads business. Microsoft (MSFT) popped higher by more than 3% after earnings showed a 41% surge in revenue in its cloud business.
