Dow futures point to a flat open as investors monitor US-China trade developments
U.S. stock index futures were marginally higher Tuesday morning with market players still focused on U.S.-China trade developments. At around 02:20 a.m. ET, Dow futures rose 7 points, indicating a positive open of just 4 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq both pointed to a narrowly higher open.
The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.11% today. Sector decliners led advancers 8 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each finished with small losses of less than 1%. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY) and real estate (XLRE) each had gains of less than 1%.
The Dow Jones index gave back 13 points (-0.05%) to close at 25,806. The Nasdaq ended the day in the red by 1 point (-0.02%) to settle at 7,576.
Stocks Finish Lower Despite Target Strong Earnings
Stocks finished slightly lower as investors considered US China trade discussions as well as Target’s strong earnings. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated Monday that the US and China were “on the cusp” of reaching a deal. Target reported stronger than expected earnings on Tuesday sending the stock up around 5%.
