Dow jumps more than 100 points, snaps 8-day losing streak

Spencer Platt | Getty Images News | Getty Images On Monday, President Donald Trump requested the United States Trade Representative identify $200 billion worth of Chinese goods for additional tariffs at a rate of 10 percent. Those tariffs followed levies announced by both nations last week.

The S&P 500 (SPY) gained +0.19% on Friday. Sector advancers led decliners 9 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) popped +2.01% to leas advancers. Materials (XLB) also added +1.42%. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each had small gains of less than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), financials (XLF) and technology (XLK) each had minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index ended the drought, adding +119 points (0.49%) to close at 24,580. The Nasdaq lost -20 points (-0.26%) to settle at 7,692.

The Dow snapped a 8 day losing streak on Friday but trade tensions remain as stocks ended mixed. President Trump threatened a 20% tariff on European cars if US tariffs and trade barriers were not removed.
