Stocks Dominated First Half Results

Here is a daily recap of the S&P 500 broken down by sector followed by sector heat map as stocks dominated first half results. Stocks in heat map are based on the top 10 holdings of each sector ETF. Dow futures rise ahead of Trump-Xi meeting at the G-20 summit

U.S. stock index futures were higher Friday morning, as traders await a key meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G-20. At around 01:40 a.m. ET, Dow futures rose 30 points, indicating a positive open of more than 46 points.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.58% today. Sector advancers led decliners 9 to 2 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE), financials (XLF) and industrials (XLI) each enjoyed gains of more than 1%, leading advancers higher. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), healthcare (XLV), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each had minor gains of less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP) and technology (XLK) both suffered small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index added +73 points (+0.28%) to close at 26,599. The Nasdaq climbed +38 points (+0.48%)  to settle at 8,006.

Stocks Dominated First Half Results

Stocks finished in the green on Friday, wrapping up its best first half of the year in 20 years. The Dow had its best June since 1938, rallying more than 7%. The S&P 500 jumped +6.9%, its best June since 1955. The S&P has enjoyed a gain of 17% year to date, its best first half of the year since 1997. The tech heavy Nasdaq ended June +7.4% month to date.

Wall Street’s gains were kept in check as traders awaited the TrumpXi trade meeting. The two leaders are scheduled to meet Saturday at the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan.

“All eyes are on the G-20. It’s all anyone’s been talking about and focuses on all week,” said James Masserio, head of equity derivatives trading of the Americas at Societe Generale. “We’re definitely seeing a bid to short-term volatility. The market is bracing for a move one way or another.”
