Stocks set to open slightly higher on US-China trade deal hopes; jobs data in focus

U.S. stock futures traded slightly higher Friday, as investors monitored progress in U.S.-China trade talks and looked ahead to upcoming jobs data. As of 01:40 a.m. ET, Dow futures were up 33 points, indicating a higher open of 31, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were also in positive territory.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.46% today. Sector advancers led decliners 10 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) +1.76% led advancers higher. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), real estate (XLRE), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each enjoyed minor gains of less than 1%. Materials (XLB) was the only sector to suffer a small loss of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index added +40 points (+0.15%) to close at 26,424. The Nasdaq climbed +46 points (+0.59%) to settle at 7,938.

Solid Jobs Report Calm Slowdown Fears

Stocks gained on Friday as investors got a solid jobs report and more progress regarding US China trade talks. The US economy added 196,000 jobs in March versus an estimate of 175,000. Unemployment rate remained at 3.8%. Wage growth expanded 3.2% below an estimate of 3.4%.
