Dow futures slightly lower as investors await GDP data, corporate earnings

U.S. stock index futures were slightly lower Friday morning, as market participants prepared for another deluge of corporate earnings and awaited key economic data. At around 03:15 a.m. ET, Dow futures slipped 27 points, indicating a negative open of more than 35 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were both seen marginally lower.

The S&P 500 (SPY) increased by +0.47% today. Sector advancers led decliners 9 to 2 as shown below in the sector graph. Healthcare (XLV) led advancers high with a +1% gain. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each enjoyed small gains of less than 1%. Energy (XLE) dropped 1.30%. Technology (XLK) had a minor loss of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index added +81 points (+0.31%) to close at 26,543. The Nasdaq advanced +27 points (+0.34%) to settle at 8,146.

Solid GDP Number Shows Economic Expansion

Stocks finished in the green on Friday as both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs after the US GDP for Q1 hit 3.2% beating an estimate of 2.5%. Exxon Mobil (XOM) fell more than 2% after the shares were dragged down by a poor earnings report. Amazon (AMZN) popped higher by 2.5% after the company beat earnings expectations.
