US futures point to more trouble for stocks at Thursday’s open

Spencer Platt | Getty Images U.S. futures fell during trade on Thursday morning stateside after all three major indexes dropped following the Federal Reserve’s decision to hike interest rates. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 202 points, implying a decline of 229.66 points for the Dow at Thursday’s open, as of 12:13 a.m.

The S&P 500 (SPY) collapsed -1.58% today. All 11 sectors finished in a sea of red as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) -2.77% and consumer discretionary (XLY) -2.24% led the market lower. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) each fell more than 1%. Financials (XLF) and utilities (XLU) dropped the least, falling less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index still couldn’t find a bottom, giving up another 464 points (-1.99%) to close at 22,859. The Nasdaq didn’t do much better, reeling back 108 points (-1.63%) to settle at 6,528.

Stocks continued their losing ways on Thursday as the sell now ask questions later mentality hits Wall Street.
