Online Retailers Fall Following Supreme Court Ruling

US stocks set for a negative open, as trade fears, oil takes center stage

U.S. stock index futures dropped into the red ahead of Thursday’s open, as tensions surrounding a trade dispute between the U.S. and China continue to simmer. Around 5:45 a.m. ET, Dow futures fell 76 points, indicating a negative open of 68.80 points. The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 futures indicated a lower start to their respective trading session.

The S&P 500 (SPY) fell back -0.63% today. Sector decliners led advancers 9 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) -1.88% led decliners down. Industrials (XLI) -1.27% and materials (XLB) -1.06% also contributed to losses. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV) and technology (XLK) each had minor losses of less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each closed with small gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index continued its decline, subtracting 196 points (-0.80%) to finish at 24,461. The Nasdaq lost 68 points (-0.88%) to settle at 7,712.

Online Retailers Fall Following Supreme Court Ruling

The Dow losing streak hit 8 days with Intel (INTC) and Caterpillar (CAT) leading the index down. Amazon (AMZN) closed in the red by more than 1% after the Supreme Court ruled that states can force online shoppers to pay sales tax. Intel (INTC) dropped more than 2% after the CEO was forced out following a relationship with an Intel employee.
