Nasdaq Milestone Leads Year End Rally

Stocks set to open slightly higher as year-end rally continues

Stock futures pointed to a higher open on Thursday morning, adding to a record-setting rally in the year-end. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 36 points, implying a 31-point gain at the open. Futures on the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were also trading higher.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.51% today. Sector advancers led decliners 9 to 2 as shown below in the sector graph. Consumer discretionary (XLY) +1.22% led advancers higher. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each enjoyed minor gains of less than 1%. Energy (XLE) and healthcare (XLV) each suffered small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index popped +105 points higher (+0.37%) to close at 28,621. The Nasdaq jumped +69 points (+0.78%) to settle at 9,022.

Nasdaq Milestone Leads Year End Rally

Stocks added to the year end rally Thursday as the Nasdaq topped 9,000 for the first time.

Investors have been adding more risk after the U.S. and China announced they have reached a phase one trade agreement earlier this month. The two countries are in the process of translating the deal, aiming to sign it in early January.

Stocks typically get a boost this time of the year during the so-called Santa Claus rally period. In the final five trading days of the year and the first two tradings days of the new year, the S&P 500 has posted a 1.3% gain on average since 1950, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac. This year’s period began Tuesday.
