US futures point to lower open

Trade talks between the U.S. and China are set to resume in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.45% today. Sector decliners led advancers 10 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), real estate (XLRE), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each suffered small losses of less than 1%. Communication services (XLC) ended flat (+0%) for the day.

The Dow Jones index dropped -95 points (-0.36%) to close at 26,478. The Nasdaq gave back -26 points (-0.33%) to settle at 7,956.

More Trade War Worries Rattle Investors

Stocks slid lower on Monday as more trade war worries led investors to doubt a trade deal.

A report suggested Chinese officials were increasingly reluctant to agree to a broad trade deal pursued by President Donald Trump.

Vice Premier Liu He, who will lead negotiations for China, told dignitaries that his offer to the U.S. will not include commitments on reforming Chinese industrial policy or government subsidies, Bloomberg reported Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Trade talks between the U.S. and China are set to resume in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. Deputy-level talks kicked off on Monday.
