Dow futures slightly lower as trade tensions persist; oil prices pare losses

U.S. stock index futures were slightly lower Thursday morning, after President Donald Trump declined to set a deadline on levying tariffs on another $325 billion of Chinese goods. At around 03:15 a.m. ET, Dow futures dipped 12 points, indicating a negative open of more than 11 points.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.41% today. Sector advancers led decliners 10 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) +1.17% and communication services (XLC) +1.12% led advancers higher. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each had minor gains of less than 1%. Healthcare (XLV) slipped losing less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index jumped +101 points (+0.39%) to close at 26,106. The Nasdaq advanced +44 points (+0.57%) to settle at 7,837.

Middle East Tensions Provide Energy Boost

Stocks added to their June gains on Thursday after energy provided a boost to the market as two oil tankers were attacked in the Middle East. US crude oil climbed 2.2% as the Trump administration blamed Iran for the attacks. Oil has been under pressure the last few months with increased US stockpiles and weaker demand growth.
