Dow futures point to a lower open after trade deficit numbers; jobless claims in focus
U.S. stock index futures were lower Thursday morning as market players remain focused on U.S.-China relations. At around 02:15 a.m. ET, Dow futures fell 87 points, indicating a negative open of more than 87 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq also pointed to a lower open.
The S&P 500 (SPY) dropped -0.81% today. Sector decliners led advancers 10 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Consumer discretionary (XLY) -1.21% and financials (XLF) -1.03% led decliners down. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) each suffered small losses of less than 1%. Utilities (XLU) enjoyed a minor gain of less than 1%.
The Dow Jones index lost 200 points (-0.78%) to close at 25,473. The Nasdaq gave back 84 points (-1.13%) to settle at 7,421.
Lower Global Growth Drop Stocks
Stocks finished in the red after the European Central Bank (ECB) cut its economic growth forecast for 2019 and added stimulus to help European banks. I ran across this quote in the above CNBC article regarding the ECB lowering the global growth forecast, “They’re basically admitting the economy is quite soft,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities. “This adds to one thing: uncertainty.”
