Dow futures slightly lower as investors await inflation data

U.S. stock index futures were slightly lower Wednesday morning, as the White House took a tough line on trade talks with China. At around 03:00 a.m. ET, Dow futures slipped 79 points, indicating a negative open of more than 70 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were both seen slightly lower.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped a minimal amount (-0.19%) today. Sector advancers led decliners 6 to 5 as shown below in the sector graph. Utilities (XLU) +1.32% pushed advancers higher. Consumer staples (XLP), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and real estate (XLRE) each had minor gains of less than 1%. Energy (XLE) -1.52% led decliners lower. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), financials (XLF) and technology (XLK) each had small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index gave back 43 points (-0.17%) to close at 26,004. The Nasdaq subtracted 29 points (-0.38%) to settle at 7,792.

Investors Watching Economic Expansion Picture

Stocks finished lower on Wednesday as tech and the banks cooled the recent rally. Semiconductors pressured tech as an analyst note said the recovery in semis will not likely happen until second half of next year. Bank stocks fell bond yields dropped. The 10 year bond yield fell to 2.12%. When reading the above CNBC article, I came across the following quote regarding economic expansion, “Momentum can carry this market higher especially into the Trump/Xi G20 summit, but the bigger (and longer-term more important) question regarding whether the economic expansion is coming to an end remains unclear, and as such it’s not the time to be overly aggressive in portfolios,” Tom Essaye, founder of The Sevens Report, said a note.
