Stock futures hold steady after S&P 500 closes just under a record

Futures contracts tied to the major U.S. stock indexes held steady at the start of the overnight session Wednesday evening just hours after the S&P 500 flirted with, but fell just short of, a new record close.

The S&P 500 (SPY) fell -0.20% today. Sector decliners led advancers 9 to 2 as shown below in the sector graph. Losses ranged from -1.94% to less than 1%. Communication services (XLC) and technology (XLK) enjoyed minor gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index declined -80 points (-0.29%) to close at 27,896. The Nasdaq added +30 points (+0.27%) to settle at 11,042.

Stocks finished mixed on Thursday as investors kept the coronavirus relief deadlock and new jobless claims on their radar. The S&P 500 failed to reach a new record closing high, falling just below the previous record high.

Jobless Claims Fall

Initial U.S. weekly jobless claims fell to 963,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That’s below a Dow Jones estimate of 1.1 million. It was also the first time since March that jobless claims came in below 1 million.

Last week, the U.S. government announced that nearly 1.8 million jobs were created in July and that the unemployment rate fell to 10.2%. Payroll numbers for May and June were also revised up.

Coronavirus Relief Standstill

Investors also watched for any news from Washington, where the nation’s top lawmakers continue to haggle over a new coronavirus-relief package for American households and businesses. Though Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi both said this week that the two sides are far away from an agreement, many investors believe a deal is inevitable.
