Investors Taking Profits Following Stocks Historical Run
Here is a daily recap of the S&P 500 broken down by sector followed by sector heat map after investors taking profits following stocks historical run. Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images U.S. stock index futures were trading sharply lower ahead of Tuesday’s open. Markets worldwide were trading in the red on Tuesday, with U.S. futures coming under additional pressure after U.S. stocks posted sharp declines Monday.
The S&P 500 (SPY) dropped 1.09% today as investors taking profits following stocks historical run. S&P sector decliners led advancers by 9 to 1. Decliners had 3 sectors that fell 1% or more…energy (XLE), financials (XLF) and healthcare (XLV). Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) had losses of less than 1%. Utilities (XLU) was the only sector to finish in the green by less than 1%.
The Dow Jones index plunged 362 points, its worst day since last May closing at 26,076. The Nasdaq did slightly better, retracing 64 points (less than 1%) finishing at 7,402.
Investors were seen taking profits today following stocks one sided run. Stocks latest run is seen as not sustainable at current pace. The S&P had its worst day since last August. The 10 year bond yield sits at 2.72%…its highest level since 2014. Higher inflation could lead the Fed raise rates faster than the market expected.
UnitedHealth (UNH) dropped 4% following an announcement by Amazon, JP Morgan Chase and Berkshire Hathaway to partner together to fight healthcare costs. AMZN +1% couldn’t help XLY turn positive thanks to HD -1% and NFLX -2% declines. Energy (XLE) gave back 2% today as each of its top 10 holdings lost more than 1%.
