Here is a daily recap of the S&P 500 broken down by sector followed by sector heat map as investors survey busy earnings week. Stocks in heat map are based on the top 10 holdings of each sector ETF. Dow futures edge lower as investors await Facebook, Microsoft earnings

U.S. stock index futures were slightly lower Wednesday morning, as market participants looked ahead to another deluge of corporate earnings. At around 02:45 a.m. ET, Dow futures slipped 17 points, indicating a negative open of more than 28 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were both seen marginally lower.

The S&P 500 (SPY) fell -0.22% today. Sector decliners led advancers 6 to 5 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) led decliners down with a loss of -1.75%. Communication services (XLC), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) each had small losses of less than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each had minor gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index dropped 59 points (-0.22%) to close at 26,597. The Nasdaq gave back 18 points (-0.23%) to settle at 8,102.

Investors Survey Busy Earnings Week

Stocks ended lower on Wednesday as investors sifted through a busy week of earnings. Caterpillar (CAT) and AT&T (T) fell after revealing their quarterly earnings. Facebook (FB) and Microsoft (MSFT) are both popping higher in after hors trading as both companies reported earnings after today’s closing bell.
