Dow futures point to lower open ahead of Trump-Kim summit

U.S. stock index futures were slightly lower Wednesday morning, after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell reiterated the central bank’s shift to a more “patient” approach to monetary policy. At around 03:45 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were 60 points lower, indicating a negative open of more than 73 points.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.05% today. Sector decliners led advancers 7 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), healthcare (XLV), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) each had small losses of less than 1%. Energy (XLE), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI) and utilities (XLU) each had minor gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index dropped -72 points (-0.28%) to close at 25,985. The Nasdaq finished just above the flatline, gaining +5 points (+0.07%) to settle at 7,554.

Investors Leave Stocks Mixed Following Busy News Day

Stocks finished mixed on Wednesday as investors digested several key news stories. US trade representative Robert Lighthizer testified on Capitol Hill regarding US China trade negotiations. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the US is working on vacating plans to raise tariffs on Chinese goods as long as talks continue. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell also testified on Capitol Hill and told the Senate Banking Committee he remains “patient” on monetary policy.
