US stock futures mixed amid ongoing US-China trade talks

U.S. stock index futures were mixed Thursday morning, as talks over a trade deal between the world’s two largest economies enter what could be the final stages. At around 02:50 a.m. ET, Dow futures rose 1 point, indicating a positive open of more than 20 points.

The S&P 500 (SPY) inched up +0.21% today. Sector advancers led decliners 7 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Materials (XLB) +1.01% led advancers higher. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF) and industrials (XLI) each enjoyed small gains of less than 1%. Healthcare (XLV), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each suffered minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index added +166 points (+0.64%) to close at 26,384. The Nasdaq gave back 3 points (-0.05%) to settle at 7,891.

Stocks went up minimally on Thursday as investors played the waiting game regarding final US China trade details. The Wall Street Journal reported President Trump wants to announce a date of a trade summit with China but enforcement details remain sticking points to a final deal.
