Dow futures fall more than 100 points as trade war concerns persist

U.S. stock index futures were slightly lower Thursday morning, as market participants continue to monitor an intensifying trade war between the world’s two largest economies. At around 03:00 a.m. ET, Dow futures slipped 145 points, indicating a negative open of more than 143 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were both seen slightly lower.

The S&P 500 (SPY) fell -1.19% today. Sector decliners led advancers 9 to 2 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) led decliners down with a loss of 3.35%. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and technology (XLK) each had losses more than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP) and healthcare (XLV) each had small losses of less than 1%. Real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each squeezed out minor gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index subtracted 286 points (-1.11%) to close at 25,490. The Nasdaq gave back 122 points (-1.58%) to settle at 7,628.

Investing Landscape Crowded Toward Uncertainty

Stocks got a steep markdown on Thursday as each of the 3 major averages finished in the red by more than 1%. The latest from the Chinese government reflected a tougher mode of expression, as the Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Gao Feng said: “If the U.S. would like to keep on negotiating it should, with sincerity, adjust its wrong actions. Only then can talks continue.”
