Interest Rates Force Stocks Decline

Here is a daily recap of the S&P 500 broken down by sector followed by sector heat map after interest rates force stocks decline. Stocks in heat map are based on the top 10 holdings of each sector ETF. Click on each picture to zoom in. Below is a summary of today’s action on Wall Street provided by CNBC:

Stocks open lower, slip from records as interest rates pop

Brendan McDermid | Reuters Stocks closed at record highs on Friday, with the Dow surging more than 200 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq climbed more than 1 percent. Tech was one of the best-performing sectors on Friday after Intel reported strong quarterly results.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped 0.67% today as interest rates force stocks decline. S&P sector decliners led all sectors down. Decliners had 4 sectors that had 1% or more losses…energy (XLE), utilities (XLU), materials (XLB) and real estate (XLRE). Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and technology (XLK) had small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index saw investors taking profits, falling 177 points closing at 26,439. The Nasdaq experienced the same giving back 39 points ending at 7,466.

Stocks were stuck in the red today as the 10 year treasury rate reached 2.7%, its highest level in almost 4 years (April 2014). A big week lies ahead of financial markets…earnings from major companies (Boeing, McDonald’s, Apple, Chevron and Facebook) all report this week, Fed decision on Wednesday followed by a jobs report Friday. Here is a corporate earnings report card as of Monday, 78% of S&P 500 companies have beaten the bottom line with 77% of those companies also beating revenue estimates.

A sea of red was the result at the end of the day.  AAPL retreated more than 2% as a report came out stating that Apple was cutting iPhone 10 production by as much as 50%. FB, JNJ, XOM and HD all had losses of more than 1% today. Energy (XLE) saw all of its top 10 holdings in the red with 9 of them falling more than 1%.
