Dow futures fall more than 175 points as investors await signals on US-China trade talks

U.S. stock index futures were lower on Thursday morning, as market participants awaited further developments from the latest round of U.S.-China trade talks. At around 04:00 a.m. ET, Dow futures fell 175 points, indicating a negative open of more than 204 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were also seen relatively downbeat.

The S&P 500 (SPY) increased by +0.45% today. Sector advancers led decliners 10 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Sector advancers were led by real estate (XLRE) +1.59%, utilities (XLU) +1.40% and industrials (XLI) +1.36%. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), materials (XLB) and technology (XLK) each had small gains of less than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY) suffered a minor loss of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index moved forward by +122 points (+0.51%) to close at 24,001. The Nasdaq added +28 points (+0.42%) to settle at 6,986.

Government Shutdown Affecting Trade Deal Progress

Stocks gained on Thursday but disappointing earnings and fear that a continued government shutdown is affecting trade deal progress between the US and China gripped the market. Macy’s dropped by more than 18% after reporting less than expected sales growth and cutting its earnings and revenue forecast. Fears of an extended government shutdown grabbed investors attention as President Trump tweeted that he is cancelling a trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland where he was supposed to meet the Vice President of China to discuss a possible trade deal between the US and China.
