The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.31% this week as geopolitics rule Wall Street headlines. Sector advancers beat decliners 6 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Utilities (XLU) led advancers with a +3.08% gain for the week. Not far behind was real estate (XLRE) +2.06%. Both technology (XLK) and consumer discretionary (XLY) each added more than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP) and industrials (XLI) each had minor gains for the week. Energy (XLE) led decliners down with a -4.52% loss on the week. Materials (XLB) lost -1.42%. Healthcare (XLV) and financials (XLF) each had minor losses on a weekly basis.

The Dow Jones index (DIA) gained +0.15% for the week. The Nasdaq (QQQ) advanced +1.35%.

Geopolitics Rule Wall Street Headlines

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s comments of “very meaningful progress” with China on trade matters sparked a rally on Monday. Stocks slipped on Tuesday after President Trump expressed doubt if the upcoming North Korean summit would take place. Stocks staged a late day rally after the Fed minutes revealed that the FOMC will let inflation run above its 2% target for a temporary period on Wednesday. Equities fell on Thursday from the news that President Trump had canceled the anticipated summit with North Korea. Both the Dow and the S&P fell on Friday pressured by losses in energy and financials.
