Dow closes more than 350 points lower, snaps longest monthly win streak since 1959

U.S. stocks fell sharply in choppy trade Wednesday, giving up earlier gains, as Wall Street wrapped up a volatile month for the major averages. The Dow Jones industrial average closed more than 350 points lower, with Caterpillar as the worst-performing stock in the index.

The S&P 500 (SPY) gave back 1.11% today as Fed uncertainty forces stocks retreat. All sectors finished in the red as shown by the sector graph. Energy (XLE) led everyone down with a 2.31% decline. Consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) each lost at least 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each lost less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index tumbled 380 points (-1.50%) finishing at 25,029. The Nasdaq only dropped less than 1% (-57 points) settling at 7,273.

Both the Dow and the S&P snapped a 10 month winning streak as both indexes lost more than 1% on the day. The final hour of the trading day was especially volatile for the Dow…losing 240 points. The Nasdaq snapped an 8 month win streak as the composite fell less than 1%. February brought volatility back into the market with a 10% correction in the major averages from their highs. The 10 year bond yield fell to 2.86% as investors play the wait and see game and look if the Fed raises rates 3 or more times this year.
