Dow futures slightly lower ahead of Federal Reserve meeting

U.S. stock index futures were mixed Tuesday morning, as market participants braced for the first day of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate meeting. At around 02:00 a.m. ET, Dow futures dipped 25 points, indicating a negative open of more than 15 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were seen pointing in opposite directions.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.97% today. Sector advancers led decliners 8 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI) and technology (XLK) led advancers higher with gains of 1% or more. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), healthcare (XLV) and materials (XLB) each had small gains of less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each had minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index popped +353 points (+1.35%) to close at 26,465. The Nasdaq jumped +108 points (+1.39%) to settle at 7,953.

Fed Easing Alongside Trade Spark Rally

Stocks climbed on Tuesday on news that President Trump will meet with Chinese leader Xi at the G20 Summit and hopes that the Fed will cut rates later in the year. Trump said in a tweet he “had a very good telephone conversation ” with Xi. He added: “We will be having an extended meeting next week at the G-20 in Japan. Our respective teams will begin talks prior to our meeting.” The summit will start on June 28.
