Stocks hold weekly gains as solid earnings overshadow geopolitical fears

Patrick T. Fallon | Bloomberg | Getty Images Several other S&P 500 components also gave investors reason for optimism throughout the week, including home improvement retailer Lowe’s. Though the Mooresville, North Carolina-based company missed expectations for the first quarter on Wednesday, its stock rose more than 10 percent after it maintained its annual financial targets.

The S&P 500 (SPY) dropped -0.24% today. Sector decliners led advancers 6 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Energy (XLE) -2.60% led decliners down. Financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and technology (XLK) each had minor losses of less than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each advanced by less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index back pedaled today, losing 58 points (-0.24%) to close at 24,753. The Nasdaq added 9 points (+0.13%) to settle at 7,433.

Energy Plus Financial Losses Forces Mixed Result

Both the Dow and the S&P fell on Friday pressured down by losses in energy and financials. WTI oil plummeted -4.54% today leading energy giants Exxon Mobil and Chevron lower. Banks stocks fell in the red because of falling interest rates. The 10 year bond yield fell to 2.93%.
