Dow futures jump more than 100 points after US-Mexico reach deal to avoid tariffs

Stock futures indicated that the Dow Jones Industrial Average would open more than 100 points higher Monday in the wake of President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend planned tariffs against Mexico. Trump announced on Friday that he would not impose 5% tariffs on Mexican exports, after Mexico agreed to strengthen immigration enforcement.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose by +0.47% today. Sector advancers led decliners 8 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Technology (XLK) led advancers higher with a +1.02% gain. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) each finished with minor gains of less than 1%. Communication services (XLC), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each had small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index added +78 points (+0.30%) to close at 26,062. The Nasdaq advanced +81 points (+1.05%) to settle at 7,823.

Economic Durability Fight Uncertainties

Stocks continued last week’s gains on Monday as investors were relieved that the US came to an agreement with Mexico regarding tariffs on Sunday. The US came to an agreement with Mexico regarding tariffs and border security on Sunday. When reading the above CNBC article, I came across the following quote regarding the resiliency of the US economy, “You have to be impressive by how resilient the U.S. stock market continues to be in the face of all the uncertainties,” said Jim Solloway, chief market strategist at SEI Investments. “It just shows the underlying forces that affect stock prices remains resilient and healthy. The market is reacting to the underlying strength of the economy and resilience, and I don’t see that suddenly crumpling even in the face of additional Chinese tariffs.”
