Earnings Beating Lowered Estimates

Here is a daily recap of the S&P 500 broken down by sector followed by sector heat map as earnings beating lowered estimates. Stocks in heat map are based on the top 10 holdings of each sector ETF. Dow futures point to a modest open ahead of earnings

U.S. stock index futures were slightly higher Monday morning, as market participants awaited further earnings reports. At around 2:00 a.m. ET, Dow futures were up 19 points, indicating a positive open of more than 18 points. Futures for the S&P and Nasdaq were both slightly lower.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.06% today. Sector decliners led advancers 8 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Communication services (XLC), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each had minor losses of less than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP) and healthcare (XLV) each had small gains of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index lost 27 points (-0.10%) to close at 26,384. The Nasdaq gave back a minimal 8 points (-0.10%) to settle at 7,976.

Earnings Beating Lowered Estimates

Stocks finished lowered on Monday as earnings beating lowered estimates. Both Citigroup (C) and Goldman Sachs (GS) posted better than expected results but slipped on a fall in trading revenue. Despite the banks results, companies who have reported, 85% have topped analysts expectations. When reading the above CNBC article, the following quote comes to mind: “The most important stat though during 1Q 2019 earnings season is how the next quarter,” Raich said. “The bad news is the magnitude of the EPS estimates cuts, are greater than normal. The good news is the EPS estimate revisions are less bad than last quarter.”
