Here is a daily recap of the S&P 500 broken down by sector followed by sector heat map as earnings beating by wider margin. Stocks in heat map are based on the top 10 holdings of each sector ETF. Click on each picture to zoom in. Below is a summary of today’s action on Wall Street provided by CNBC:

Dow futures move higher ahead of fresh earnings

U.S. stock index futures moved higher Tuesday morning, as market participants awaited further earnings reports. At around 02:00 a.m. ET, Dow futures rose 60 points, indicating a positive open of more than 54 points. Futures on the S&P and Nasdaq were also seen slightly lower. Corporate earnings remain the biggest market focus.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose minimally +0.05% today. Sector advancers led decliners 8 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Financials (XLF) led advancers higher with a +1.41% gain. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and technology (XLK) each had small gains of less than 1%. Real estate (XLRE) led decliners down with a -2.36 decline, followed by healthcare (XLV) -2.05% and utilities (XLU) -1.24%.

The Dow Jones index added +67 points(+0.26%) to close at 26,452. The Nasdaq advanced +24 points (+0.30%) to settle at 8,000.

Earnings Beating By Wider Margin

Stocks gained on Tuesday as earnings reports poured in. Stronger than expected earnings from Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), BlackRock (BLK) and Bank of America (BAC) boosted investor sentiment. BlackRock’s CEO Larry Fink could see a “melt up” because “we have not seen money put to work.”
