US futures slightly higher after Fed signals patience with rate hikes

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a slightly higher start to the trading session on Thursday after the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged. At 03:30 a.m. ET, Dow futures were up 26 points, implying a higher open by 19.14 points. Futures for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also pointed to a slightly higher open.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose +0.86% today. Sector advancers led decliners 8 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Communication services (XLC) surged +4.08% to lead advancers. Utilities (XLU) +2.11, consumer staples (XLP) +1.85% and healthcare (XLV) +1.25% also had significant gains. Consumer discretionary (XLY), energy (XLE), industrials (XLI) and real estate (XLRE) each had small gains of less than 1%. Materials (XLB) led decliners down with a loss of -1.50%. Financials (XLF) and technology (XLK) each had minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index subtracted 15 points (-0.06%) to close at 24,999. The Nasdaq added +98 points (+1.37%) to settle at 7,281.

Earnings Alongside China Trade Progress Propel Stocks

The S&P 500 closed out the month having the best January since 1987, climbing 7.87%, its biggest advancement since October 2015. The S&P 500 has had quite the rebound, falling 9.18% in December and touched bear market territory on Christmas Eve. Many believe the rebound in the S&P 500 is from oversold levels in December. Amazon (AMZN) reported earnings after the bell, beating on earnings and revenue but giving light Q1 guidance.
