Dow touches 23,000 for the first time, closes at record
The Dow Jones industrial average rose on Tuesday, and broke above 23,000 for the first time on an intraday basis. The index faded and closed three points shy of 23,000 as bank shares rolled over. The Dow first crossed 22,000 for the first time just 76 days ago.
The S&P 500 (SPY) barely moved today, adding 0.07% as the Dow Jones Index touches 23K. S&P sector advancers led decliners by 6 to 4. Sector advancers were led by healthcare (XLV) +1.34%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), energy (XLE), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) all were in the green by less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) lost ground on the day, falling by less than 1%.
The Dow Jones Index rose 40-points ending just three points shy of Dow 23K at 22,997. The Nasdaq lost less a point finishing at 6,623.
The main focal point from today’s session was the fact the Dow touched 23K in the morning and danced around that big round number the rest of the day before closing just shy by three points. The Dow hit 22K just 76 days ago.
Some bright spots and standouts from today’s action included Dow members Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and United Health Group (UNH). Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) surged over 3% after reporting excellent quarterly numbers, beating on EPS and revenue. JNJ also offered a full year forecast that was above estimates. United Health Group (UNH) rocketed up more than 5% after also offering a full year forecast that beat the consensus.
