US futures point to higher open ahead of key economic data

U.S. stock index futures were higher Tuesday morning after Wall Street posted a record close on Monday.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.12% today. Sector advancers led decliners 7 to 4 as shown below in the sector graph. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) each had minor gains of less than 1%. Real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) led decliners down with losses of more than 1%. Healthcare (XLV) and technology (XLK) each had small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index added +30 points (+0.11%) to close at 27,492. The Nasdaq was flat, advancing +1 point (+0.02%) to settle at 8,434.

Cyclical Rotation Powers New Highs

The Dow closed at a new record high on Tuesday with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq close behind.

Strong earnings, more promising economic data and trade progress drove the Dow to an all-time high on Monday, following the S&P 500 and Nasdaq’s new records reached last week.

The Dow’s year-to-date gain now stands at nearly 18% after rallying 3.4% in the past month. The S&P 500 is up more than 22% this year after surging 4.1% in the past month.

China is pushing President Donald Trump to remove more tariffs on about $125 billion worth of Chinese goods imposed in September as part of the “phase one” trade deal, reports said. “Firmer commitments on lifting tariffs” are needed for China to pay a visit to the U.S., according to the South China Morning Post.

The corporate earnings season has largely been better than expected as 75% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported topped analyst expectations, FactSet data shows.
