US stocks futures tick higher ahead of China-US talks, Jackson Hole summit

Drew Angerer | Getty Images News | Getty Images With little economic data out at the start of this week, investors have been turning their attention to news surrounding the U.S. administration’s relationship with China and the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The S&P 500 (SPY) was in the green by +0.21% today. Sector advancers led decliners 9 to 3. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLY), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and technology (XLK) each had small gains of less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP), real estate (XLRE) and utilities (XLU) each had minor losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index advanced +63 points (+0.25%) to close at 25,822. The Nasdaq added +38 points (+0.49%) to settle at 7,859.

A majority of stocks finished with gains on Tuesday as the S&P 500 reached a new intraday high passing a high reached in January. The current bull market tied the dot com bull market which ran from October 1990 to March 2000. A strong economy and record earnings from companies have helped the S&P 500 reach this milestone.
