US futures point to slightly higher open
Monetary easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve this week and by the European Central Bank last week appears to have improved market sentiment.
The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped -0.49% today. Sector decliners led advancers 8 to 3 as shown below in the sector graph. Technology (XLK) -1.17% and consumer discretionary (XLY) -1.15% led decliners down. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and real estate (XLRE) each suffered minor losses of less than 1%. Energy (XLE), healthcare (XLV) and utilities (XLU) each enjoyed small gains of less than 1%.
The Dow Jones index gave back -159 points (-0.59%) to close at 26,935. The Nasdaq subtracted -65 points (-0.80%) to settle at 8,117.
Chinese Cut Trip Short Worrying Investors
All 3 major averages finished in negative territory going into the weekend on Friday as Chinese trade officials cut their US trip short.
A China delegation had canceled a visit to U.S. farms in Montana, the Montana Farm Bureau said around midday Friday. Nicole Rolf, the Bureau’s director of national affairs said the officials were headed back to China earlier than planned.
