The Dow Jones industrial average closed at a record on Thursday on the back of stronger-than-expected quarterly results from Caterpillar and 3M. The 30-stock index gained 140.67 points to close at 26,392.79. The Dow rose as much as 206 points but came off its highs after President Donald Trump told CNBC the dollar will get “stronger and stronger” under his leadership.
The S&P 500 (SPY) rose 0.06% today as Caterpillar earnings keep stocks momentum going. S&P sector advancers tied decliners 5 to 5. Sector advancers were led by utilities (XLU) +1.53%. Consumer staples (XLP), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and materials (XLB) all ended up higher by less than 1%. Consumer discretionary (XLY), energy (XLE), financials (XLF), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) all closed in the red by less than 1%.
The Dow Jones index continued its strong gains by adding another 140 points finishing at 26,392. The Nasdaq ended 3 points below the break even line for the day closing at 7,411.
The Dow’s triple point gain today was powered by Caterpillar and 3M, as both companies reported strong quarterly results. The Dow gained as much as 206 points but came back down as President Trump said the dollar will get “stronger and stronger” under his leadership. The upbeat quarterly results companies are reporting, allow analysts to raise their price targets pushing stocks higher.
AAPL lost almost 2% today, not allowing technology (XLK) to finish in the green. Discretionary stocks AMZN +1.46% and NFLX +3.21% had strong days today. Industrials BA and MMM each almost gained 2% to power industrials (XLI) higher. 6 out of the top 10 holdings in industrials finished in the green and 5 of those 6 companies posted 1% or higher gains.
