Dow futures rise 100 points amid hopes of progress in US-China trade talks

U.S. stock index futures were slightly higher Friday morning, amid renewed optimism on the progress of trade talks between Washington and Beijing. At around 7 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose 107 points, indicating a gain of more than 114 points. Futures on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 also rose.

The S&P 500 (SPY) climbed +0.67% today. Sector advancers led decliners 10 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Healthcare (XLV) +1.20% and industrials (XLI) +1.08% led the market higher. Communication services (XLC), consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), materials (XLB), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) each enjoyed minor gains of less than 1%. Energy (XLE) and real estate (XLRE) each suffered small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index jumped +211 points (+0.82%) to close at 25,928. The Nasdaq added +60 points (+0.78%) to settle at 7,729.

Best Yearly Start Within Decades

Renewed optimism on China trade talks pushed stocks higher on Friday as the S&P 500 had the best yearly start since 1998. Progress was reportedly made in China trade talks including forced technology transfer. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had a “productive working dinner” with China trade officials. The Dow Jones index gained +11.2% this quarter, best start since 2013. The S&P 500 gained 13.1%, best Q1 start since 1998. The Nasdaq advanced 16.5% this quarter, best start since 2012.
