Wall Street set for strong open as tax bill approval boosts sentiment

Drew Angerer | Getty Images News | Getty Images U.S. stock index futures pointed to a strong positive open on Monday, as sentiment was boosted by news that the U.S. Senate narrowly passed a major tax bill over the weekend.

The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped 0.11% today as sector rotation send majority stocks lower. S&P sector advancers tied decliners by 5 to 5. S&P advancers were led by financials (XLF) +1.52%, consumer discretionary (XLY) +1.16% and materials (XLB) +1.03%. Consumer staples (XLP) and industrials (XLI) rose less than 1%. S&P decliners were led by technology (XLK) -1.61%, real estate (XLRE) -1.31% and healthcare (XLV) -1.22%. Energy (XLE) and utilities (XLU) fell less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index gained 58 points closing at 24,290. The Nasdaq was in the red by 72 points ending at 6,775.

There were a couple of main focal points grabbing investors attention throughout the day. First, the morning began with investors showing positive sentiment towards the Senate passing its version of a tax bill over the weekend. Second, a sharp decline in tech (XLK) -1.61% and a 1.52% gain in financials (XLF) meant sector rotation…tech lagging and financials leading.

Here are some standouts in today’s volatile action. As mentioned above, large cap tech took a big hit today as MSFT -3+%, FB -2+% and AMZN -2+% all had better days. However, JPM +2%, HD +2% and DIS +4% all caught strong bids today as investors found this stocks would benefit the most from tax reform.
