Corporate earnings for the S&P 500 have grown 6.1 percent, 15.5 percent and 10.8 percent in the fourth quarter of last year and the first and second quarters of 2017, respectively. Earnings are expected to grow by 4 percent for the third quarter, according to S&P Capital IQ.
The S&P 500 (SPY) inched up today by only 0.09% as the Nasdaq Alongside Netflix Reach Record Highs. S&P sector advancers led decliners by 6 to 4. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) all grinded higher by less than 1%. Energy (XLE), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI) and utilities (XLU) all took breaks from gains today, finishing lower by less than 1%
The Dow Jones index added 30 points ending at 22,871. The Nasdaq hit a closing record high of 6,605 by gaining 14 points on the day.
The main focal point from today’s session was all about record highs. All three major indexes hit some sort of high today. The S&P 500 hit an all time intraday high. The Dow also hit an intraday high. While the Nasdaq hit intraday and closing highs.
Some bright spots and standouts from today’s action included Netflix (NFLX) blowing passed $200 after Goldman Sachs reaffirmed the stock as a buy with a price target of $235. Earlier in the week JP Morgan also raised its price target on the streaming giant.
