Energy Alongside Tech Help Equities Advance

Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images U.S. stock index futures pointed to a higher open on Monday, as investors kept an eye on the latest bitcoin moves. In the previous session, U.S. equities finished on a positive note, following the release of a U.S. jobs report that was stronger than the market expected.
The S&P 500 (SPY) rose by 0.32% as energy alongside tech help equities advance. S&P sector advancers led decliners by 7 to 3. Consumer discretionary (XLY), energy (XLE), healthcare (XLV), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE), technology (XLK) and utilities (XLU) all were higher by less than 1%. Consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF) and industrials (XLI) all were lower by less than 1%.
Some focal points from today’s session included energy and tech sectors leading 0.70% and 0.80% respectively in a very calm session. Crude oil rose to just below $58 to boost energy stocks. A Fed rate hike decision announcement is expected on Wednesday. Many feel that the market already has a rate hike already priced in given the good economy.
Disney (DIS) led standouts today by popping more than 2% after a report came out stating that Disney was still in close negotiations with Fox regarding the sales of some assets. Apple (AAPL) gain 1+% today after buying music recognition app Shazam for an undisclosed amount. Microsoft (MSFT) also caught a strong bid by rising 1%. Finally, utilities (XLU) inched higher with all top 10 holdings ending in the green today.
