Week in Review: Trump heads to NATO summit

Trump confronts Germany about Russian pipeline, 12 boys rescued from Thailand cave and President Trump greeted with with thousands of protests on his trip to the United Kingdom.

The S&P 500 (SPY) climbed +1.50% this week. Sector advancers beat decliners 10 to 2 as shown below in the sector graph. Consumer discretionary (XLY), industrials (XLI) and technology (XLK) each enjoyed weekly gains of over 2%. Communication services (XLC), consumer staples (XLP), financials (XLF) and healthcare (XLV) each had gains of over 1%. Energy (XLE) and materials (XLB) each had minor gains of less than 1%. Utilities (XLU) lost 1.18% this week. Real estate (XLRE) had a small decline of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index rose +2.29% on a weekly basis. The Nasdaq added +2.28%.

Earnings Take Spotlight Minus Trade Headlines

The lack of a negative headline regarding trade boosted stocks on Monday as financials (XLF) led the market higher. Investors focused their attention on the upcoming earnings season, putting the urgency of the trade war on the back burner on Tuesday. Stocks were once again pounded as additional trade headlines hit stocks on Wednesday, snapping the Dow’s 4 day winning streak. Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB) and Microsoft (MSFT) all rose to all time highs as technology lifted the broader market on Friday.
