US stocks set to open lower as central banks tighten policy

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a lower open Thursday morning as investors digested comments from the Federal Reserve. At around 4:06 a.m. ET, Dow futures slipped 27 points, indicating a negative open of 31.20 points. The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 futures also indicated a lower start to the session for their respective markets.

The S&P 500 (SPY) added +0.25% today. Sector advancers led decliners 8 to 3. Leading advancers higher was utilities (XLU) +1.22% and consumer discretionary (XLY) +1.04%. Consumer staples (XLP), healthcare (XLV), materials (XLB), real estate (XLRE) and technology (XLK) each had minor gains of less than 1%. Energy (XLE), financials (XLF) and industrials (XLI) each had small losses of less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index fell back 25 points (-0.10%) to close at 25,175. The tech heavy Nasdaq rose 65 points (+0.85%) to settle at 7,761.

Dealmaking Activity Spark Stocks Higher

The sense of dealmaking activity on Wall Street lifted a majority of stocks on Thursday. Fox (FOXA) rose more than 2% after Comcast (CMCSA) announced a bid for several of Fox’s assets for $65 billion. Comcast’s offer tops Disney’s bid of $52.4 billion. Comcast’s offer comes a day after a judge approved the AT&T Time Warner merger. Bank stocks fell as the ECB (European Central Bank) said it would not raise rates until next year, sending treasury yields lower. The 10 year bond yield fell to 2.94%.
