Wall Street set for a slightly higher open amid oil volatility; inflation data in focus

U.S. stock futures pointed to a slightly higher open on Wednesday amid volatility in the oil market and as investors looked ahead to upcoming inflation data. As of 6 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were indicating a higher open of nearly 60 points, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures edged into the green.

The S&P 500 (SPY) dropped -0.76% today. Sector decliners led advancers 10 to 1 as shown below in the sector graph. Financials (XLF) -1.35%, technology (XLK) -1.20% and utilities (XLU) -1.04% led decliners down. Consumer discretionary (XLY), consumer staples (XLP), energy (XLE), healthcare (XLV), industrials (XLI), materials (XLB) and real estate (XLRE) each had minor losses of less than 1%. Communication services (XLC) bucked the trend, adding less than 1%.

The Dow Jones index lost 205 points (-0.81%) to close at 25,080. The Nasdaq subtracted 64 points (-0.90%) to settle at 7,136.

Apple Enters Bear Market Sending Stocks Lower

A downgrade of Apple (AAPL) pressured the stock -2.8% lower, leading the overall market into the red. Financials (XLF) also fell more than 1% after Democrat Maxine Waters said the Trump administration curbing of financial regulations “will come to an end.”
